Why Latency & Polling-Rate Matter
Every time you move or click, your mouse sends a report to the computer. Polling rate tells you how many of those reports are sent per second (e.g. 1000 Hz = once every 1 ms). Input-lag latency is the delay between your physical click and the moment the operating system registers it. Competitive gamers chase sub-2 ms latency for faster reaction times, but photographers and UI designers also need consistent pointer movement for pixel-perfect work.
- High polling rates smooth out mouse movements.
- Low, consistent latency reduces double-click errors.
- Having mouse jitter often points to cable, USB-hub or sensor issues.
All tests on this site run entirely in your browser — no test data leaves your device. Important: Our browser-based tests measure event timing and consistency as observed by your browser, which includes additional delays from browser processing, OS scheduling, and other factors. While useful for detecting issues and comparing relative performance, results won't precisely match manufacturer hardware specifications. See the about page for more information.
Have a mouse issue? Check these great mice out!
If your tests show double-clicks, jitter, or inconsistent polling, these are popular “known-good” mice that help rule out hardware problems fast.

Trackpad Sensitivity Grid
Drag over the grid to test sensitivity.
Input Lag Tester
Move your mouse after starting to plot latency over time.
Technical Details:
This tool measures the time between consecutive mousemove events as reported by your browser's JavaScript engine.
What it measures: Event delivery consistency (not true hardware latency)
Browser limitations:
requestAnimationFramethrottles events to display refresh rate (typically 60Hz = ~16ms)- Background tabs may be throttled to 1Hz or paused entirely
- OS event coalescing can merge multiple hardware events into one browser event
- CPU load and power-saving modes affect timing accuracy
Best for: Detecting inconsistent input, comparing mice, identifying problems — not for verifying manufacturer specs.
Polling Rate Tester
Higher polling rates equal smoother movement — ideal for gaming.
Technical Details:
This calculates how frequently mousemove events arrive at the browser by tracking timestamps.
Why it's different from hardware polling rate:
- Hardware layer: Your mouse sensor samples position at 125Hz, 500Hz, or 1000Hz
- USB layer: USB controller polls the mouse at the configured rate
- OS layer: Operating system may batch events or apply smoothing
- Browser layer: JavaScript can only see events after all the above processing
Example: A 1000Hz mouse will typically show 60-120Hz in this test because:
- Browser
requestAnimationFramelimits updates to display refresh rate - OS may coalesce multiple events to reduce CPU overhead
- Background processes affect timing precision
Use this to: Compare different mice, detect drops in event frequency, verify your mouse is reporting events — not to confirm manufacturer Hz ratings.
Mouse Health Verdict
Based on your test results (latency + polling). This won’t change unless you run the tests.
